COMMUNITY EDUCATION
Community Education
is a program designed to help keep the city and its citizens
informed on a variety of topics and issues including disposal of
used syringes, communicable disease education, addiction education,
first aid and many other subjects that can affect our lives.
The Community
Education team visits schools, private businesses, community
policing centres, BIA’s, and any other organizations that may come
in contact with used syringes, educating them on proper disposal
techniques; where supplies may be purchased for disposal/safe
storage; and first aid information in the case of an accidental
injury with used or contaminated sharps.
The school facet of
the program provides students with the opportunity to experience and
witness life on the Downtown Eastside (DTES) by accompanying DEYAS
staff on ride-alongs or walk-alongs so that they may see firsthand
the effects of drug use on the community and individuals.
The Community
Education team also works within the Harm Reduction model by
informing individuals on the streets about disease prevention and
the risks associated with drug use. These activities often lead to
youth accessing other DEYAS services which get them off the streets.
In 2006 and 2007,
The Community Education program was awarded with the Toskan Casale
Foundation award for performing exceptional service to the
community. As stated on their website; “The Toskan Casale Foundation
is committed to supporting and strengthening community-based
grassroots organizations that, through their social programs, reach
out to at-risk people and provide them with immediate relief and
long-term stability.”
