Vancouver’s Downtown
Eastside is an
active community of
diverse people, some
of which are
homeless and in need
of help. Beyond the
four basic needs
required for living
(food and water,
shelter, oxygen…)
the common
denominator,
particularly with
the street
entrenched youth, is
a lack of belonging.
Inspiring a feeling
of acceptance
requires a
commitment from a
skilled team of
outreach workers who
can develop trust
with individuals in
need and who can
ensure youth,
regardless of their
situation, that they
truly are people
worthy of health,
happiness and a life
beyond the streets.
DEYAS
has a dedicated
team, many of which,
have come from the
streets themselves.
This was part of the
vision of John
Turvey, the founder
of DEYAS, to instil
dignity and provide
opportunity to those
most in need. Today
we continue with
Turvey’s legacy and
for this reason, are
able to assist
hundreds of street
youth every year in
developing their
self-worth, breaking
destructive cycles
and creating happy,
healthy lives.
This year, in 2008
we plan to continue
on with our mission,
providing community
education, health
promotion, outreach
interventions, harm
reduction and detox
services while
adding new work and
life skills
development programs
and opportunities as
well as launching
our Change the
Future campaign.
